The National Youth Summit on Education, Justice, and Leadership began as a collaboration between The Ethics Project, The St. Louis Public Schools, and The University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL)  in consultation with The US Department of Justice. It is designed to bring together intellectually gifted student leaders from cities across the United States to work together with national experts in education, social justice, and business and economics. Sixteen hundred selected junior and senior high school students from diverse backgrounds will spend three intensive days working with business leaders, college professors, judges, legislators, legal experts, law students, and social justice experts examining our current educational systems, methods of discipline and the United States’ dependence on prison income. They will think through alternatives to incarceration, means of eliminating the school to prison pipeline and will devise methods of increasing student retention, engagement, and achievement.

With an ever-increasing rise in student suspensions, dropout rates, school violence, teacher burnout, mental health issues and arrest and convictions of youth, The National Youth Summit is designed to raise awareness of challenges facing the youth of today and to change the conversation to focus on academic excellence, the inherent talents of our youth and the talents and commitment of thousands of educators and community leaders. We are celebrating the excellence we know our youth can achieve and we expect them to succeed.
